When it comes to treating and recovering from injuries, time is of the essence.
Studies have demonstrated that the longer you wait to start to deal with an injury, the longer and harder your road back to full activity will be. Delaying physical therapy for your injury may not only increase the amount of time you are in pain and having to skip your favorite activities, it may also increase the amount of physical therapy you actually need.
Unfortunately, our medical system is set up to force you to wait and delay care. Your insurance company likely requires you to see your Primary Care Provider (PCP) as your first line of defense. Getting in to see your PCP isn't an instant process. It often takes 1-2 weeks to get an appointment. Then, when you see your PCP they may or may not refer you to physical therapy right away. They may give you some simple advice and tell you to come back in a couple of weeks if it's not getting better, THEN they'll refer you to PT.
Once you get the referral then you have to make an appointment with a PT clinic that accepts your insurance. These clinics are often at capacity and seeing many patients per day to make ends meet. So, their first available appointment is often 3-6 weeks out.
This entire process of just getting in to get started with physical therapy can literally take 6-8 weeks. By this time your injury has progressed from the acute phase, through the sub-acute phase and now into the chronic phase. Chronic injuries are more challenging to deal with and overcome than acute injuries.
Fortunately, at Hollingsworth Performance, we circumvent this frustrating situation. As a cash-based clinic, we are not beholden to your insurance company's demands.
We don't require a referral.
You can book an appointment as soon as you feel the initial onset of an injury.
We can treat your injury while it is still in the acute phase and help guide the healing process so you have a quicker and better long term outcome. Additionally, we can give you advice on how to modify your workouts so you don't have to watch your fitness slip away as you wait for your injury to heal. Better yet, we can actually coach you through modified workouts.
So, if you are injured and frustrated by how the system isn't working for you, chart your own course. Give us a call and we can get you in quickly. As a matter of fact, we'll get you in this week ... perhaps even tomorrow.
Time is of the essence.
